TOP 5 KIMCHI STORAGE TIPS YOU MUST KNOW!

How long does Kimchi last and what are the best practices for storing kimchi? Here are the top 5 storage tips for our kimchi lovers out there!!

1. At room temperature, opened kimchi lasts 1 week.

The fermentation takes place faster when it is left at room temperature and it can be stored at room temperature for up to a week after opening. If you love more fermented kimchi leave it out in the open for 3-6 hours to allow for natural fermentation before storing them in a chilled location.

2. Be sure to refrigerate your kimchi at or below 4°C.

Keeping your kimchi in the fridge at the ideal temperature within 0°C-4°C so that it stays fresh much longer (about 3-6 months). We recommend not to freeze your kimchi as it will kill the probiotics and the texture will be greatly affected.

As kimchi continues to ferment in the fridge, it produces lactic acid bacteria as well as other beneficial bacteria during this process. — leading it to a sourer taste. Dislike the sourness? Try mixing it into dishes to make Kimchi Fried rice or Soondubu jjigae to mellow out its flavour.

Avoid cluttering your fridge too as this will bring up the temperature inside.

3. Lessen the exposure to air and use clean utensils

To extend the shelf life, store the kimchi into a sterile, airtight jar. Make sure that all ingredients are submerged in brine before you reseal the kimchi. Always use clean utensils when you handle kimchi in its container, as used utensils may introduce unwanted bacteria that can cause spoilage.

4. Try to consume it within 3 months!

If you love your kimchi in a milder flavor crunchier texture, you should consume your Kimchi within 3 months! After 3 months, kimchi may become mushy yet, it is still safe to eat for up to 3 more months. Just look out for mould, as this is an indication of spoilage.

Please note that sourness is not a mark for spoilage, as Kimchi naturally ferments over time to become more and more sour.

5. Unsure? Don't risk it!

Most importantly, you should never eat kimchi that smells off or has visible mold. If you have kept your kimchi for a very long time and you are unsure if your kimchi is still edible, it’s best to toss it out. Why not try our JIN Kimchi that is made to order daily with the freshest ingredients!
